The Chinese in the olden days considered diabetes as a wasting and thirsting syndrome, because diabetics suffered both severe thirst and hunger even as they unjustifiably lost weight. It would then appear that the Chinese identified diabetes with its external presentation. However, the interesting aspect of old the Chinese Medicine is that even though they could not determine a diabetes patient's blood sugar level, they were able to identify herbs that controlled diabetes.
